Medway Test

If you'd like your child to be considered for a grammar school they will need to sit the Medway Test.

Once you register your child for the Medway Test, they will sit it and receive their results before the closing date for secondary school applications. This is to help you make an informed decision when applying for secondary schools.

Request a review

If your child hasn’t been assessed as suitable for grammar school following the Medway Test and you feel this isn't a true reflection of their ability, you can request a review of their academic work. This is not a re-marking of their test.

You should discuss with your child's school whether they feel a review is right for your child.

Review requests must be submitted by Monday 16 October 2017.

Reviews take place over Thursday 19 and Friday 20 October 2017.

Once you have requested a review

Once you have requested a review we'll ask your child’s school to provide work in English, Maths and Science.

A panel will review the work to decide if it shows your child is of grammar ability, even when the Medway Test score does not.

Each year the review process can find up to two per cent of the year group to be suitable for grammar school.

Review decision

Review decisions are sent to parents by Tuesday 24 October 2017.

This is before the closing date for school applications on Tuesday 31 October 2017, so you can name grammar schools on your application if the review is successful.

If you're not happy with the review decision

If your child isn't assessed as suitable for grammar school following the Medway Test and the review process, you'll need to wait until after school places are offered (on 1 March 2018) before you can do anything further regarding grammar schools.

If you have named Medway grammar schools on your application you'll have the right of appeal, even if your child isn't assessed as suitable for grammar school. This type of appeal is known as an assessment appeal.
